Superstar athlete with blazing speed and great footskills. Privately trained with Jim Givargis to acquire the footskills. Her 12.4 100m time as a freshman at Hayfield was one of the fastest sprint times in the state. Gretchen played outside and centermid--one of the strong midfield group that consisted of players all selected to ODP. Gretchen was one of three Freshman selected for varsity at tough Hayfield (ranked in top 10) High School. Privately trained with Jim Givargis. Lettered in cross country every year. Gretchen moved to the new South County High School and was selected as team Captain her Junior and Senior years.

At Sun Cup, Galaxy played Score at the Shore/State Cup Champion '87 PWSI Cardinals. The teams tied in regulation, but the Galaxy passed and combined well. On one sequence Coles steals the ball from her left defensive position, passes to Gretchen on the right, who combines with Jenny. Meanwhile, Coles overlapped from the back all the way to the right side and gets the pass from Gretchen deep down the right side. The clip below is about half of that sequence.
